Papazoglou Chalikias Anastasios
Senior Research Associate & Technical Advisor
Anastasios makes research survive contact with production.
A member of the BHV Group at CERTH-ITI since 2013, he combines system architecture, full-stack engineering, and technical leadership to transform experimental ideas into secure, scalable systems used by real people—occasionally even concurrently. His work spans distributed architectures, multi-tenant SaaS platforms, sovereign AI infrastructure with local LLMs and vector search, event-driven middleware, real-time data processing, and XR/VR applications.
Over the years, this has somehow involved:
- Validating energy-management systems across European pilot sites.
- Connecting mobile, cloud, VR, and heavy backend services without creating a distributed tragedy.
- Evolving research prototypes into open-source and commercial multi-user XR platforms.
- Building accessibility tools combining computer vision, offline synchronization, and retail data.
- Engineering Kafka and ELK pipelines for smart-city decision-making.
- Accelerating machine-learning kernels with CUDA before GPUs became everyone’s personality.
His career progression can be summarized as:
Research Engineer ⟶ Technical Lead ⟶ Technical Advisor ⟶ Person who opens the architecture diagram when someone says, “It works on my machine.”
Anastasios is particularly interested in Distributed Software Architecture, Generative AI and RAG, real-time IoT and Big Data systems, Human–Computer Interaction, accessibility, and immersive technologies.
His preferred workflow is:
- Build the prototype
- Find the bottleneck
- Remove the bottleneck
- Discover a more distributed bottleneck
- Add observability
- Call it Research Impact ™
